Glossary
Collaboration
When the person sharing the application allows other people in the meeting
to work in the shared application. To allow collaboration, first share the application,
and then click the Collaborate button on the NetMeeting toolbar.
Directory Server
A server on the Internet or Intranet that displays a list of the people who
are registered at that moment. To call people using NetMeeting, you can click their name
in the directory list for a particular server.
Distributed meeting hosts
When you have multiple locations with multiple people all in one meeting,
it's helpful to have a host at each location, as well as a main host for the meeting. For
optimal performance in these situations, participants should connect to the host at their
location, and then the distributed hosts should connect to the main host.
ILS server
(see directory server)
Meeting host
The person to whom the participants connect when they join the meeting.
Typically, the host is the also the person running the meeting.
Participant
Anyone who participates in the meeting, but is not the host. Participants
can still share documents and collaborate.
Sharing
When you allow people to see a particular application that is
installed on your computer. To share an application, click the Share button in the
NetMeeting toolbar, and then select the application from the list. Once you do this,
everyone in the meeting will be able to see the application, as well as any changes that
you make, as you make them. You must have the application running in order to share it.
WAN connection
Unlike a LAN (Local Area Network) connection, a Wide Area Network
connection connects two or more computers that are geographically separated. WAN
connections are typically much slower than LAN connections (56k is common) so it's
important to minimize the number of connections over the WAN if you want reasonable
performance in your online meeting.
